Virgin Islands History Month: General Buddhoe

The entire month of March is dedicated to the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives to make certain that we enjoy the paradise we so dearly take for granted sometimes. General Buddhoe is one of our many heroes we would like to highlight because of his amazing contributions to Virgin Islands History. John Gottlieb or Moses Gottlieb who is known to the public as General Buddhoe led the slaves through the streets of Fredericksted to their freedom. Buddhoe was a free black who led the slaves rebellion on St. Croix in 1848. According to historians the Emancipation Proclamation serves as a crucial moment in Virgin Islands History. Messages were sent from Danish to Von Scholten requesting his presence. The slaves had enough and became hostile with threats to burn down the town. According to historians the General was only 28 years old at the time of the proclamation. July 3, 1848 was commemorated as Emancipation Day. He was a remarkable leader and this is why we honor him today in the town of Frederiksted. A statue of General Buddhoe blowing a conch shell can be seen displayed in the town of Frederiksted to honor him for all of his accomplishments and sacrifices.

Celebrating Black Virgin Islanders: R.City

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, we highlight our local success stories and the significant impact they've made in our community. We would like to highlight R.city. R.City Theron Thomas & Timothy Thomas, are a duo who were born and raised in St. Thomas U.S.V.I. They began their career in 2003, however the journey to stardom hasn't been an easy one. They've been performing as a duo from elementary school. Back in the day they were known as 2EKwip and were described as kiddie rap due to their content at the time. After High school R.City relocated to South Florida where they moved in with another very popular name in the VI Verse Simmonds. They slept on a blanket on the floor of their friend's home. At the time they only thought of themselves as artists and nothing else. They would soon learn that the music game isn't as easy as it may seem. Months went by and there was little to no progress. They received an opportunity to perform in Atlanta and decided to relocate there. They hid on Subway carts and would sleep there after it had stopped running for the evening. A producer then let them sleep at his studio. However things would eventually look up when they were introduced to producers from St. Louis who gave them the opportunity to write songs for other artists. Trina worked with the brothers, but the music was never released. The producers were profiting but the brothers weren't. The brothers decided to return to St.Thomas. There they changed their name to Rock City which would eventually be shortened to R.City for copyright purposes. They worked several jobs with every intention of returning to the mainland. Akon signed them to Interscope imprint, they spent about 4 years there with nothing to show for it. They were released from their contract at some point. They've written music for artists such as Miley Cyrus, Becky G, Rihanna, and many more. The brothers are now very successful songwriters and artists. It wasn't an easy road, but they still came out on top and continue to succeed. Although they're a duo, Timo & Theron often participate on separate projects. Timo who is the youngest brother by about 10 months often raps, some of those feature local Virgin Islands artists. Theron continues to reach his fans by using his social media platforms to post positive and motivating messages on a daily basis. While songwriting for some of the most popular names in music today. Their success story will be spoken about for years to come, they failed at first but never let that stop them from getting to where they wanted to be in life. This is motivation to us all who have a dream we'd like to make a reality.

Celebrating Black Virgin Islanders: Henry E. Rohslen

Henry E. Rohslen airport which is currently owned by Virgin Islands Port Authority, was named after the first fighter pilot in the 99th Squadron of the U.S. Air Corps, from St. John Virgin Islands, Henry Ernst Rohslen. Henry was the Chairman and President of the National Airlines of Ecuador. He served 2 terms as a senator in the Virgin Islands Legislator, and he was an entrepreneur and a St. Croix Administrator. There was another major player we would like to add and that's Mr. Herbert Heywood. Both Rohslen and Heywood fought against prejudice and injustice while serving as Tuskegee Airmen. Henry E. Rohslen and Herbert Heywood were recruited from St. Croix, Virgin Islands to the Tuskegee Pilot Training Program where they graduated from the Tuskegee Flight School. That time may not have been the easiest time to be both black and a member of the armed forces but they persevered. After their honorable discharges they both returned home and contributed to their communities in ways such as serving as senators, and volunteered in their community until they were laid to rest.

We're worthy to be praised, this month we acknowledge those who have sacrificed for us to live as we do today. This month we pay homage to those who have sacrificed everything to make things easier for us. Black heroes such as Martin Luther King Jr, Madame C.J. Walker, Barack Obama, George Washington Carver, Kamilla Harris, Rosa Parks, Oprah Winfrey and many more have sacrificed everything so the black community could be proud and inspired to follow in their footsteps towards greatness.
