Celebrating Black Virgin Islanders: R.City

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, we highlight our local success stories and the significant impact they've made in our community. We would like to highlight R.city. R.City Theron Thomas & Timothy Thomas, are a duo who were born and raised in St. Thomas U.S.V.I. They began their career in 2003, however the journey to stardom hasn't been an easy one. They've been performing as a duo from elementary school. Back in the day they were known as 2EKwip and were described as kiddie rap due to their content at the time. After High school R.City relocated to South Florida where they moved in with another very popular name in the VI Verse Simmonds. They slept on a blanket on the floor of their friend's home. At the time they only thought of themselves as artists and nothing else. They would soon learn that the music game isn't as easy as it may seem. Months went by and there was little to no progress. They received an opportunity to perform in Atlanta and decided to relocate there. They hid on Subway carts and would sleep there after it had stopped running for the evening. A producer then let them sleep at his studio. However things would eventually look up when they were introduced to producers from St. Louis who gave them the opportunity to write songs for other artists. Trina worked with the brothers, but the music was never released. The producers were profiting but the brothers weren't. The brothers decided to return to St.Thomas. There they changed their name to Rock City which would eventually be shortened to R.City for copyright purposes. They worked several jobs with every intention of returning to the mainland. Akon signed them to Interscope imprint, they spent about 4 years there with nothing to show for it. They were released from their contract at some point. They've written music for artists such as Miley Cyrus, Becky G, Rihanna, and many more. The brothers are now very successful songwriters and artists. It wasn't an easy road, but they still came out on top and continue to succeed. Although they're a duo, Timo & Theron often participate on separate projects. Timo who is the youngest brother by about 10 months often raps, some of those feature local Virgin Islands artists. Theron continues to reach his fans by using his social media platforms to post positive and motivating messages on a daily basis. While songwriting for some of the most popular names in music today. Their success story will be spoken about for years to come, they failed at first but never let that stop them from getting to where they wanted to be in life. This is motivation to us all who have a dream we'd like to make a reality.
