TikTok: Viral Sensation taking over the VI and all over the world

TikTok began in September of 2016, but recently since we've been experiencing a worldwide crisis it has become the perfect distraction we need during these trying times. It has now become the most popular up to date app. While some are trapped in their home because of this pandemic, this is the perfect distraction to keep their minds of everything that is going on around us. Our "public figures" wasted no time taking advantage of their free time and hoping on the app to relieve some much needed stress. While tiktok may have some similarities with other social media apps, there are differences as well. Subscribers to the app can create a 15 sec video with any clip from a track they desire. While we haven't experienced the app for ourselves, we're pretty much caught up from the many stories of our Facebook, snap chat and Instagram followers. One of our local artists "Bugz Bugs," received recognition with one of his latest singles "Wah now ft. Pep Dawg & Prya. One of his many followers began the "Wah now Challenge," and challenged others to join in on the fun. Other public figures such as "Reggae Artist" Tia Mason joined in on the fun along with her siblings for much needed entertainment. While the rest of the world is at home to prevent further spread of the virus, they join in on the fun with family and friends. Many look at this as a distraction, but if that's what we need to keep us distracted until this is over. Say a little prayer for you and your love ones and take a break and join in on the fun.

Moments in Virgin Islands History: Artists Who’ve Made History

This Month we celebrate "Virgin Islands History Month," A Month dedicated to the people who've made history in a significant way. We've celebrated many people who've made a contribution to society with their dedication to the Virgin Islands and their loyalty. Music is a major part of our history and culture, everyday we strive to make the world know who we are. Music flows through our islands, and the veins of our artists and musicians. Many of our artists have ventured of from the islands to the mainlands to make a name for themselves and to also put us on the map. Today we recognize them as pioneers.

Here are a list of Local Artist who ventured of to the mainland, put on the map and became successful:

Modifica immagini

Timothy and Theron Thomas

Timothy and Theron Thomas are a dynamic duo from the beautiful island of St. Thomas U.S.V.I. These brothers began their music journey in 2003. They're known as the song writing and record producing team. The duo has worked with their fair share of artists, producing the hottest tracks out today. They're also artists and have had an amazing music career thus far. It wasn't always easy for the two, in fact when they began their music journey they were tested in so many ways in the industry but they never gave up faith. Recently Timo and Theron received the keys to the city and had a celebration in their honor. Today their one of the biggest names in the industry and they represent the Virgin Islands with pride. For that they deserve to be part of Virgin Islands history and to be spoken and passed on from generation to generation.

In 2001 she was recognized as Atlanta's best new artists. She wanted to put music out there that was meaningful, and what better way to do it then through Reggae Music. She still performs today and paved away for so many female artists trying to be heard right here in the Virgin Islands.

Media Outlets in the VI:We need more and we deserve more

We often draw conclusions to the mainland on the similarities and differences between us, one difference is how serious the media coverage is up there. In the Virgin Islands there are a handful of media outlets, and although we all do our best to keep every piece of the Virgin Islands covered. Are we doing enough, or should we be doing more? The reason I decided to write a piece on this was because, I'm generally concerned about our future here in the Virgin Islands. Most media outlets have the support of the Dept. of Tourism, or The Government of the United States Virgin Islands behind them. In the mainland there are many different networks and behind the networks there are sponsors and donors, etc that keep the show going. If someone comes up with an amazing concept and source behind of it to make it successful, there is usually a network to pick it up, depending on how well there performance is. They either go on to do extremely well or get cancelled after a couple of seasons. It all depends on their performance and how well the audience responds to them. There are talk shows, reality Tv shows, major tv drama and more. The talk shows are on everyday and the reality shows are on rotation, its basically a well oil machine. Here in the Virgin Islands we have alot of talent and potential to take our media outlets to another level. There has been many people who've been in the game for years and then there are the new players to the game. Either way we all make a difference in some way, shape or form. Whatever seems impossible now will simply be child's play in the future. Our point to all of this rambling is times are changing and we should be more evolved than we are in the VI. We can't depend on the Virgin Islands Government or The department of Tourism only to fund our dreams. They're the only ones that seem like they can make our dreams come true, but there should be other options beside the two of them. Many outlets shouldn't have to spend so much out their own pockets chasing their dream. Although you must invest in yourself for someone to invest in you, in my personal opinion we sure can use some help. For now we're just going to work on the world just knowing who we are, where we come from and what we stand for.

Celebrating all Virgin Islands Artist

There is so much buzz about so many talents in the Virgin Islands, why narrow it down to the top 5 or the top 10. There are so many talented musicians, entertainers, you name it. We can't put all of these people into a category they deserve so much more than that. I want to give recognition to all the Virgin Islands artists, you guys have been doing your thing. Everyone has been pushing, and you've all been working hard as hell to get to where you need to be. Granted it is a journey and a long one at that, but it's not impossible. The video above is one of our VI artists singing Caribbean Strong after we were struck by a cat. 5 hurricane in September 2017. We have a lot to prove, because we are a small island, but we don't give up that easily. Nothing comes easy everything takes time and we are willing to go through the process to make it. I'm inspired by all of the different entertainment we have available in the VI and that's why St.Croix Entertainment is here. Keep pushing guys we're getting there and we will show the world what the VI has to offer.

VI Legendary Artists: Where are they now

The Fabulous Stroka Band has been around for 11 years, they've had 3 different generation of members, but with that they faced many great successes. The band originated in 2004 with their first hit song "Hyper Booty." In the third installment of the band there were a total of 6 members. This band contributed so much to the VI culture, they were the pillar in the community in a sense. Their genre of music was unique in a sense because people where able to relate to it. The members all had a specific gift that contributed to the success of the band. Stroka Band performed at various venues and numerous islands. They even won road match for some of these islands. Although we were a bit younger then we remember we wouldn't go anywhere without hearing songs from this now legendary band. A few of the hits over the years include "Leh Go, Wire Waist, and many more. They really knew how to pull any crowd, doesn't matter the venue, it would be done. They even worked with some big names we know today. I'm sure you guys are aware of Mango Man Big band's Drummer, we were told he once worked with the band, fast forward to couple years later and he is part of this epic band himself. Swanks which is member of "Big Band" would match the Riddim man for Stroka Band and the band often wondered who was this kid. Look at where Swanks is today he is part of one of the most talented bands out right now and we're not saying that's because Stroka but they definitely seemed to have a positive influence. He attended Central High School at the time. We sat with one of the singers of Stroka Band "Jahmal Miranda" to receive some insight on the band and where they are today. Everyone is pretty much still in touch, but doing their own thing these days. We can't say too much but they might be something in the works we just have to stay tuned. These days Mr.Miranda is a proud owner of his very own restaurant JV Diner and very much in love with all the joys of food and being a professional chef. We couldn't receive the scoop on the other members as detailed but we hear they're doing just fine after an 11 year run. He is also working on an independent music project which is on the low for now. Stroka Paved the way for the bands we have present today as one of most successful band of their era. The representation of the VI that this band demonstrated was astonishing. Thank you to the Fabulous Stroka Band for paving the way for future artists and bands we have in our mist today. We appreciate Mr.Miranda for taking the time to give us some much needed information on where the band is now.

Madras Re Imagined: Curated by: Joseph Bess

Madras, which is often believed to be originated from India, has made its way throughout the Caribbean and become a major part of the culture. It was brought to the Caribbean after slavery had been abolished. Slaves would often use Madras for festive days like Sundays and Holidays. This evening we saw the true definition of what it means to have Madras re-imagined. Joseph Bess a young entrepreneur in the community, took the cloth to newer heights. Joseph along with 6 other brilliant designers teamed up to showcase just what they can do when given the chance to re-imagine madras. The designers are listed below:

  • Andre Ettienne of "The House of Ettienne"

  • Designs By Regal

  • Jabari Lake of SJL Collections

  • Niarus

  • Zulema LLanos

  • Ahmadz Fashion by Jamal Drummond

  • Mrs.Emmanuel

  • Joseph Bess "Modern Madras"

The event was hosted by Sommer Sibilly Brown, her job of entertaining the anxious crowd while awaiting designs to hit the stage was all too inspiring. As the models made their way through the runway, they each were introduced, the designers were recognized and we received a brief description of the attire. Every design to hit the runway had its unique style. There was something so fascinating about the display of madras used by these designers in different form, truly a beautiful display of colors. The common goal between designers was to show the appreciation for culture, while doing it in style.

Modifica immagini

Designer: Zulema Llanos

Having more fashion shows like this can enlighten the community, especially those who aren't well versed in the history behind madras seems like it should be an annual event. The event was well executed, the models did a phenomenal job, the designers had us in awe and and the food by "Roti Master" hit the right spot during intermission. This event was top notch, and a beautiful display of just what our culture has to offer. Also everything has a significant meaning behind of it, never forget the past, but try to embrace the future.

Modifica immagini

Joseph Bess "Modern Madras"

We should never forget our past, we should always embrace who we are as a people and what something like madras truly means to us. Congratulations to Mr. Bess on an amazing display of Madras. Congrats to all the designers who participated to make this even a success.

The Greatest Festival Season:Crucian Christmas Festival 2019/2020

St. Croix U.S.V.I festival season for 2019-2020 was epic, it was memorable, it was definitely eventful and drama free. This year's festival was one of the longest, yet quickest one we've ever seen. The season began with Carnival Meets the Runway which is a yearly display of all of the festival troupe costumes that will be displayed during the Adult's Parade. The different troupes slowly began having their reveal parties to display just what they had in store for us to admire and choose from. Events were lined up either everyday or every other day to keep residents, returning guests and welcome new guests to our beautiful island entertained. We didn't attend every event lined up, but for the ones we did have the honor of attending. We have to say it was completely worth it. Some of the events are as followed: VI Celebrity Auction hosted by us alongside A-team Promotions, Prince & Princess festival Pageant, Miss St. Croix 2019-2020, Tia's Black Cocoon Ep release, Sunny Side Up, Small Island Fete, Not one but 4 or 5 jouverts, who's counting at this point, Fetelogy, Sweet Bread & Jam, different nights at the festival village, Silent Party, numerous events hosted by Majestic Ent and many more including jouvert and both the Children's and Adult's Parade let's not forget the Xtashun Reunion which was the most anticipated event of the season. USVI Division of Festivasl first year of overlooking the festival season was a complete success to say the least. The face of the committee Shamari Haynes has been pushing this festival season and he can rest easy until St. Thomas Carnival comes around, and the reason being he did the damn thing. The entire festival season rained, however that never stopped the fun, we partied underneath the rain and worried about the consequences later. The festival village had many big names both locally and internationally. We had performances from Big Band, Fusion Band, Adam O, Bugz Bugs, Mic Love, Pumpa, Tia, Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Nights in which the village was dedicated too this year, Nikki Brooks, Rudy Live, Ras Batch, Kruziano, Shaw Hp, Spectrum Band, Monea, Nadia Batson, Gramps Morgan, R.City, Krosfyah, Teddyson John, Cruz Rock, Destra, Tito Rojas, Mikey Mercer, Pressure Busspipe, Bunji Garlin, Showtime Band, Lyrikal, OMG Band and R.City. The festival village was the best yet, no negative vibes, good food, esp Booth 26 (Gas Lamp) and Booth 23 which were our favorite with good food all festival long. The performers didn't disappoint, they hit the stage and gave it their all, the crowd appreciated every bit of it. Soca Monarch had so many incredible artist performances, but when the results came in there could only be 1 winner for each category, Bugz Bugs and Blackest (Blackest and the Fusion Band) Captured the titles of the Monarch. Bugz also won People's Choice for his festival hit "Wuk Together" and Blackest came out victorious with "Carnival Zombie," with Kevin Williams Jr a young artist capturing 1st place. Jouvert and Adult's Parade were two of our favorite events, and the reason is simple, it was not only the flow of alcohol, but the unity, drama free and culture which came out of it. The Children's parade displayed what our beautiful and talented youth, work yearly for, the culture and diversity that is The Virgin Islands. Overall for the festival season is 1000/1000, we experienced so many amazing events this season and that's what its all about. The returning guests and visitors were always entertained and we hope to see what else USVI Festivals has in store for us.

St. Croix Festival Prince&Princess Pageant 2019-2020 Review

The St. Croix Festival Prince & Princess pageant has come and gone, and it has definitely set the tone for any future pageants. Shanisa Emmanuel Chair person and Christopher Rivera Co-Chair and their team put on a hell of a show. Although this was their first year as chairs of the pageant they did a phenomenal job. The show ran smoothly, it began with an introduction dance by the former Princess, the contestants and the prince contender. This was followed by the cultural segment in which each of the contestants shined with their different and unique wear. The prince contender wasn't bad himself as he came to the stage with a sugar mill strapped to his cultural wear. Intermissions were taken over by the various talented individuals of JG Management Models, Dance with Dee Dee Dance Academy Thalema Dance Studio, SCEC Dance Squad, Kruziano, PUMPA, Kevin Williams Jr, and Cherise King. After the intermissions it was time to get back to the show, we were introduced to the contestants and contender for prince and this time it was the talent segment. Contestant #1 Aniyah Williams dazzled the crowd with a dance number, Contestant #2 Alayah Wattley took back in time with some good old story time, Contestant #3 Janiaha Warden played her way into our hearts with a performance on the piano. Before the questions and answer, the girls and guy shined with their evening attire. Finally we came down to the question and answer segment of the show, the questions were of course pre recorded and all 3 contestants gave spectacular answers to the questions. Finally the reigning princess took her final walk, and the moment we were all awaiting for arrived. The crowning of the new Princess for the festival season 2019-2020. This one was definitely a tough call, because all of the contestants did such an amazing job, when it all came down contestant #1 cleaned house. The contender for festival prince Jaheim A. Creque received his crown with pride, the contestants all received gifts to take home. No one left the auditorium empty handed, at the end the day they're all winners. Congratulations to the new festival prince and princess 2019-2020. Congratulations also goes out the division of festivals, their first year of taking over the festival season has been a hit so far, looking forward to the rest of the festival season.
