THE CELEBRATION OF JUNETEENTH
Juneteenth in one word is an annual holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States and has been celebrated by African Americans for many years. On June 15, 2021 the Senate passed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday. The House of Representatives by 415-14 voted on June 16 with President Joe Biden signing the bill on June 17, 2021 making Juneteenth the eleventh American federal holiday and the first to obtain the legal observance as a federal holiday. This holiday is considered the longest running African American holiday. On June 19, 1965, as the southern rebellion collapsed emancipation became a well known celebration. In Modern Day celebrations songs such as Swing Low, Sweet Chariot and Lift Every Voice are sung and readings written by African American writers such as Maya Angelou & Ralph Ellison are recited. Other celebrations include reunions, parties, reenactments and Miss Juneteenth contests. Juneteenth is the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. holiday was declared in the 80s.
