Black History Month
Today marks the beginning of Black History Month, this month is dedicated to celebrating all of the achievements we have had as a black community. Black history month was created in 1926 in the United States by Carter G. Woodson and the association for the study of Negro life and history. It was important to get the history of Black Americans into the public since there was no knowledge of black people in the schools. Carter Woodson stated "If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world and it stands in the danger of being exterminated. This month showcases the accomplishments of several Black Americans throughout history. Some may argue, why do we just get only a month to celebrate "Black History Month." Well during the month of February alot of significant things occurred. On February 23, 1868 W.E.B Dubois civil right leader and co founder of the NAACP was born. On February 3, 1870, the 15th amendment was passed granting blacks the right to vote. On February 21, 1965 Malcolm X, the militant leader, a man who promoted black nationalism was shot by three Black Muslims.
